In 1973, Randal King returned home from two tours in Vietnam. While in the military, Mr. King served in the United States Navy as a Seabee. Building from his experience in his construction battalion, Mr. King decided to start his own company with the purchase of a single dump truck. From a lonely dump truck, he began hauling materials for construction companies throughout the upstate of South Carolina. By 1977, Mr. King had begun paving driveways on the side each weekend. At first, these driveways were paved by hand. Over the course of the next year, Mr. King acquired a paver and a roller from local junk piles. Using his diesel mechanic experience from the Navy, he was able to repair each piece of equipment and return them to daily use.
After several years of hard work and long hours, Mr. King had saved enough money to purchase his first self propelled asphalt paver and other related equipment in 1980. This new addition allowed King Asphalt to take on larger, more profitable projects. From driveways to large commercial parking lots, Mr. King was always looking for ways to expand his business.
After years of buying asphalt from local suppliers, King Asphalt bought its’ first asphalt plant in 1983. Located on the hill behind the current Liberty asphalt plant, this 1966 1-ton Littleford Model 122-60 batch plant served as the next stepping stone. Now, King Asphalt could produce as much asphalt as needed while better controlling its’ own paving schedule. By 1988, King Asphalt had outgrown the Littleford plant in Liberty. With the addition of a full size paver to the fleet, the demand for asphalt had grown significantly. That year, Mr. King purchased a 180 ton/hour continuous mix plant and placed it at the Liberty site. The 1-ton Littleford batch plant was moved to Simpsonville to create King Asphalt’s second plant site in the upstate. One year later, Mr. king leased another plant from a local contractor and placed it in Spartanburg. Mr. King was careful to never let an opportunity to expand pass him by.
In 2001, King Asphalt began a new venture. The company took on several SCDOT projects over the course of the next couple of years. With this new high production work, came the need for better, more reliable plants capable of producing higher quantities of asphalt. In the spring of 2001, King Asphalt purchased a new 400 TPH Astec continuous flow asphalt plant with 600 Tons of storage to replace the old 5 ton batch plant. This plant proved to be much more efficient and reliable than plants from the past. With a surge of SCDOT projects in the early 2000’s, King Asphalt once again expanded. In April of 2006, King opened one of the southeast’s largest asphalt production facilities, a 500 TPH Astec continuous flow asphalt plant with 900 tons of storage in Simpsonville, SC. This new plant could store 900 tons of hot mix asphalt to be used by King Asphalt’s three paving crews, as well as, the many FOB customers who rely on asphalt for their projects. From the days of hauling a few tons of asphalt and placing it by hand, to producing and selling asphalt for the entire upstate of South Carolina, King Asphalt has never forgotten where it came from. Satisfied customers and high quality work has always allowed this company to prosper. At King Asphalt, WE DO WHAT WE SAY WE’RE GOING TO DO – safely, on time and within budget. |
